Sneak peak: The new Submariner watches from Rolex
Rolex usually has at least one release each year that makes collectors and fans alike swoon.
Despite COVID-19 and the lack of exhibitions this year, the new Oyster Perpetual Submariners for 2020 certainly don’t go unnoticed…
And what’s more, they don’t come with the usual price tags as they are available from as little as £6,450.
Let’s check out the new Submariner and Submariner Date models…
Materials
Like those models gone before, the Submariner (Reference 124060) does come in a few metal options but the main one is Oystersteel – an alloy developed by Rolex.
The black unidirectional rotatable Cerachrom bezel is virtually scratchproof and can’t be altered by sunlight. Its edges are designed so that divers have a good grip and can set the time underwater whilst wearing gloves – clever, huh?
The wristwear also features a black dial with large luminescent hands and hour markers, so the Submariner looks incredibly smart, night or day.
But most importantly, these markers come in simple shapes – triangles, circles, rectangles – as well as thick hour and minute hands, are a great safety feature, allowing for instant and reliable legibility to prevent confusion underwater. Coated in Chromalight, the markers emit a neon blue glow in dark conditions and as with all Rolex watches, are guaranteed for performance.
Three new versions of the new Submariner Date (reference 126610) include coloured Cerachrom bezels including Oystersteel with black dial/green bezel, an 19-karat white gold with black dial/blue bezel and a yellow Rolesor with royal blue dial and matching bezel.
Power
Boasting an incredible 72 hours of power, these new models pack a punch. The Calibre 3230, which first appeared this year, powers the new Submariner while the new Submariner Date carries the 3235 – making it the first in the range to be powered by this inhouse Rolex movement.
Both models feature Rolex’s Chronergy escapement, which improves the watch’s energy efficiency. And when it comes to shock, these watches are unbeatable. The Chronergy is resistant to magnetic fields and Rolex’ blue Parachrom hairspring are 10 times more accurate than a normal hairspring, which protects the movement against shock. And if that’s not enough protection, there are yet more shock absorbers on the balance and escapement wheel.
Case
Both the Submariner and the Submariner Date now feature redesigned cases in a slightly bigger 41mm size. The profile is highlighted by the reflections from the case sides and lugs.
Both models now feature remodelled bracelets with Rolex’ Oysterlock folding safety clasp and the Rolex Glidelock extension system which means no need to find fiddly tools are required to add or take links out.
Waterproof
Setting the standard for modern diving watches, the Submariner was first launched in 1953 and was the first that was waterproof to 100m. The new Submariner, complete with Oyster case and a Triplock winding crown made of scratch proof sapphire, is waterproof to 300m deep.
