Bright watches for dark times
We are all stuck in this never-ending self-isolation where a trip to the supermarket feels like a day out. Coronavirus and the rate at which it is spreading is challenging for most of us yet we have high hopes to work through it.
Watches are certainly not deemed ‘essential shopping’ but they do belong to a steely industry and are therefore inspiring for us all. The sheer genius that goes into their craftsmanship alone, is testimony to human perseverance.
So this week we bring you a selection of the most colourful watches to brighten the darkest of times.
Hublot Big Bang Pop Art
While Hublot watches are often seen as masculine, the Big Bang series is quite the opposite taking its vivid inspiration from Andy Warhol and pop art.
This Big Bang Pop Art comes on a green strap but there are 24 others to choose from in rubber, fabric or alligator and including even more vivid colours – blue, green, red and white.
Offered in a 41mm yellow gold and polished steel case, there are variations on the theme, all complemented by bezels housing matching precious stones, including amethysts and pink sapphires.
Whichever daring self-winding timepiece you choose, you’ll love the 42-hour power reserve.
Richard Mille 16-01 Citroen
The RM 16-01 Citron from Richard Mille’s Bonbon collection is good enough to eat. Its bright orange rubber strap is so striking against the front bezel, made of Carbon TPT®.
Our favourite feature is the mini sculptures on the dial – two oranges and two lemons, lacquered by hand. A coating of powdered enamel and fine sand helps to create a frosted look. These sit on grade 5 titanium plates just above the movement.
Not everyone’s cup of tea at first glance, but there’s no doubt that it provides a talking point.
This sweet collection is a reminder that, even during one of the hardest times for the watch industry, collecting can actually be joyful rather than serious.
Rolex Daytona Rainbow
With all the rainbows adorned in windows across the nation, we thought it was only right to include the Rolex Daytona Rainbow in our round-up.
Considered a cult timepiece, former versions of the watch were created from yellow gold but this one in evergold rose with a 72-hour power reserve, is delightful.
A limited edition watch, powered by the Rolex calibre 4130 movement which guarantees accuracy to two seconds. You could expect to pick up a pre-worn one for over £70,000.
Its bezel is set with 26 baguette-cut sapphires while the mid-case features 56 brilliant diamonds. A black lacquer dial and rose gold hands complete the look.
Royal Oak Offshore Diver
After the success of the Royal Oak Offshore Diver Chronograph in a range of vibrant colours. Audemars Piguet introduced some effervescent colours in a non-chronograph style.
We love this edition in lime green with its matching rubber strap. This watch, which features a 42mm stainless steel case, also came out in acid yellow, orange, white and dark blue editions, each with an extra blue strap.
These watches are all water resistant to 300m and the Royal Oak hands, with luminescent coating are incredibly visible underneath the water. Featuring a rotating inner bezel, you can also benefit from a diving scale and zone from 60 to 15 minutes.
