British designer unveils his industrial Hublot Big Bang watch
Everyone knows that each Hublot Big Bang is bolder and more daring than the one before.
Now it’s the turn of British fashion designer Samuel Ross…
Named the Fashion Award’s 2018 British Emerging Menswear Designer, he launched streetwear label A-Cold-Wall and at just 25 years old his business revenue was $1.7 million.
He’s also collaborated with brands including Off-White, Nike and Oakley.
No stranger to the Hublot brand, he’s already won its design prize three years ago and been an ambassador ever since.
New perspective for an icon
Samuel’s keen eye for design has brought a new perspective on the iconic Big Bang watch, to bring a limited edition bold orange offering.
The Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross has a satin-finish, polished titanium cash with a rubber strap. Its unusual titanium honeycomb mesh structure and bold shade will make it the perfect piece for any collector – but you’ll need to be fast if you love it as only 50 pieces are available.
Created in titanium, sapphire and PU polymer, the timepiece is incredibly lightweight and easy-wearing as well as very comfortable. The orange strap adds a zest for life but the rubber strap can be changed for something more subdued. But why would you want to?! We just love its energy.
At 44mm diameter and 13.8mm thick, it’s a big old watch making the futuristic parts stand out. And at the heart is the open-worked micro-rotor tourbillon (calibre HUB6035) beating away at 3Hz. You can see loads of the 282 components due to the sapphire dial – but that is almost invisible until it catches the light.
Creative vision
Hublot’s CEO Ricardo Guadalupe said he was thrilled to have Ross on board because his multidisciplinary skills and creative vision would push Hublot’s teams to be even more innovative with its ideas, materials and colours.
“His charisma and creative vision brought out the best of our creative team at Hublot and I think you can see this in the Big Bang Tourbillon Samuel Ross. It’s truly different and unique, and it’s also a great example of Samuel’s love of stark geometry, form and design.”
Building blocks of design
Ross took his inspiration from engineering, using the honeycomb structure as the building block for his design, as it can be seen everywhere – but especially in beehives – bringing a robustness to the watch’s sapphire dial, case back and strap, while not holding back on modern style.
He said: “Hublot is industrial design in its purest form. This design was inspired by movement, acceleration, industrial beauty that reflects our immediate environments. The city, the coarse materials and colours that format our global epicentres. The flecks of deeply saturated tones bring this matter and repeated glints of colour into a universal palette of vigilance and one linked to global melting pots – this is where the prominence of our signature orange takes centre stage.”
Available now, the new style is priced $116,000 USD – that’s a staggering £92,000.
