Can A Man’s Watch Be Part Of A Woman’s Wardrobe?
Nowadays, the lines that separate men and women’s fashion have become somewhat blurred. It’s not like the 1900’s when women were restricted to wearing dresses and skirts, and men to trousers and shorts. Society has relaxed gender stereotypes and now, people are enjoying a lot more freedom when choosing how to look and what to wear.
Men’s luxury watches for example, have become increasingly popular with women, and the demand for smaller (26mm) watches has dwindled. So it has us wondering, can a man’s watch be part of a woman’s wardrobe, and why do women want to wear them?
Fashion And Gender Neutrality
If we compare today with the 1970s it’s obvious that a lot has changed. The fashion world has erupted like a creative volcano spitting out sequins, ruffles and even, in some very bizarre cases, garments made of wood and metal. Now if some of the world’s most popular celebrities can proudly endorse clothes like THAT, then I’m pretty sure a watch that is slightly more chunky and masculine than the average ladies watch can be part of a woman’s wardrobe.
Some of today’s most popular trends are quite simple with very little frills, extreme colours or patterns. Most men’s watches are plainer than women’s watches (which can sometimes feature ‘over-the-top’ feminine decor), so women may be swaying towards a man’s watch for its modest, contemporary appearance. Not to mention everyday sportswear fashion has risen from the dead, which may explain women’s new interest in men’s sport watches in particular.
The Design
When it comes to a wristwatch that is both practical and useful, it always seems to be a man’s watch that comes to mind. I would be lying if I didn’t say that there is a shortage of ladies wristwatches featuring sophisticated complications. With so many women experiencing the freedom to enjoy careers and hobbies that were previously male dominated, like automotive racing and diving, watches like the Cosmograph Daytona or Submariner can come in handy for the active woman.
The Investment Quality
It’s no surprise that when it comes to investing in watches, a man’s watch is most definitely the better buy. In particular, men’s Rolex steel sports watches are experiencing huge amounts of success, prices are increasing because the supply just can’t keep up with the demand. Although a ladies Rolex can hold its value, you’re more likely to guarantee a higher return in the long run with a man’s piece.
Making A Statement
Wearing a luxury watch used to be a sign of interest in the horological industry as well as wealth. But now, owning a Rolex or Patek Philippe is more a representation of the individual’s wealth, than a deep interest in watchmaking. Yet, that’s not to say that there aren’t women out there who wear watches because they enjoy collecting and are fascinated by the industry.
I’m speaking in terms of the general consensus and with the younger generations mimicking the habits of reality and movie stars, labels and branded accessories have become THE way of flaunting your wealth and status.
So just to summarise, if a woman finds a man’s watch attractive, then she should definitely invest. With fashion trends the way they are, it’s no surprise that chunky watches have grabbed the attention of the ladies. Oversized t-shirts are all the craze, so why not oversized watches?
