Grand delivery is a jewel in the crown
Here at Luxe Watches we’re really excited by a certain, very cool delivery this morning.
We’ve managed to get our hands on a rare Patek Philippe Grand Complications Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Platinum, reference 5271/13P-001, in excellent condition.
This timepiece, part of a series introduced in 2015, has a 41mm dial, fixed platinum bezel and a platinum case set with a total of 58 baguette-cut emeralds, and one extra emerald at 12 o’clock.
But with several subtle refinements, even purist collectors who are not keen on gems could have their minds changed by this watch.
Origins
At Baselworld 2014, Patek revealed the new reference 5271 – an upgrade of the 5270 but with black dial and a platinum case.
Powered by the in-house calibre CH 29-535 PS Q, it’s a sophisticated piece of work that showcased at the Watch Art Patek Philippe Grand Exhibition in London, to celebrate the brand’s 175th year.
Impressive strap
Thin in profile, it’s easy to wear and does have a broad stance but can be worn well on smaller wrists.
The hardwear is simple and impressive. With monotone stitch, the strap features rectangular scale alligator skin with calfskin underneath and has a platinum folding clasp to match.
The Calatrava cross is set with 22 baguette-style emeralds, each matched for colour by eye and optical scanner so there is no gradient shift from stone to stone. Each is faceted by hand with no bracket mounts, as you’d expect to see on a Rolex. The strap is also easy to change.
Incredible precision
This watch is Patek’s first in-house perpetual calendar chronograph movement with a total of 456 parts.
The caseback is strong, with dramatically cut-out and gem-set lugs, while the screw-on caseback boasts a sapphire exhibition window to admire all the intricate details.
The dial has a lacquered black base, carefully created using 12 hand-applied layers to create the glossy richness you see in the pictures. And did we mention, each layer is buffed by hand? Truly incredible precision – and we’d expect nothing less from the Swiss watchmaker.
More features
The wristwear also features black discs for the day and the month – the first and only series of Pateks to feature black dial and black matching calendar discs. You can also find a day night indicator, leap year phase indicator, tachymetric scale, moonphase complication and chronograph minute jumper.
The chronograph has superb action with manual wind and 65-hour power reserve. And while it does have a 30m water resistance, you’d have to be crazy to go for a dip in this one.
