How to keep your luxury watch safe on holiday

If you’re taking off to sunnier climates this summer, there’s no doubt you’ll want to take your luxury watch with you.

But travelling abroad with a valuable item such as a Rolex, needs extra caution particularly in public spaces such as bars and street markets, as these areas can be magnets for thieves looking for holidaymakers with costly items.

Wait! Is your watch even covered on your insurance whilst you lay on the beach?

Read our tips for keeping valuables safe on holiday and ensure your insurance is adequate before you get on the plane.

Be vigilant

Keeping your valuables safe while travelling is crucial. Airports can be chaotic, making it easy to lose track of belongings during security checks. Thieves often exploit this chaos, stealing valuables from trays.

To protect your items, avoid packing them in easily accessible places. Instead, hide high-value items in separate pouches or pockets that are difficult for thieves to reach unnoticed. A jewellery wrap is useful for this.

Keep valuables in hand luggage

If you want to keep your watch safe, keep it with you at all times. On a plane, store it in your hand luggage or a handbag that will stay with you, if you are not wearing it.  It’s not worth the risk of checked luggage getting lost or stolen – and you spend the whole holiday worrying if your Rolex is in Rome.

Take essentials only on excursions

However much you want to wear an expensive watch or piece of sentimental jewellery, you should limit the amount of items you take. Jewellery not being worn should be stored in a safe in your holiday home, where possible.

Some insurance policies will not cover belongings that were stolen because they were left unattended, so keep this in mind if you choose to take any. Remember that when visiting popular resorts and attractions, you will be immediately spotted as a tourist – and therefore, a target for thieves. Be discreet about your watch and avoid any dimly lit areas.

Get insured

You may be wondering if your travel insurance covers your valuables on holiday. The answer is, there are different forms of insurance and there are varying rules when it comes to paying out for them. Some policies will cover for loss or theft – but you must read the small print before signing the dotted line.

The essentials to check are:

  • The timescale in which you would have to report a stolen or missing watch
  • The cap at which the insurance cap is willing to pay out. If it’s £300 for personal belongings on your travel insurance, your Submariner won’t be covered.
  • Exclusions that might apply to luxury items. Some policies might not cover high-value items, or they might require additional coverage.
  • The exceptions that come into effect when you try to claim including your circumstances.

For clarity, always contact your insurance provider directly to ask if your luxury watch is covered and if any additional steps are needed to ensure its protection.

Assetsure

For insurance of your lovely luxury watches, we recommend taking out a police with AssetSure before you fly. You can use our referral code 600537 if you purchased your timepiece from Luxe Watches.

They understand you’ll want to take your watch with you on holiday – and when you do, wherever you are in the world – you’ll be covered against loss, theft or damage, provided the trip is not more than 60 days in duration.

Whilst wearing the watch, you’ll be covered by an Assetsure arranged policy. However, if you take your watch off, remember it must be kept in a safe for cover to be valid with this insurer.

However, with different insurers you must check the policy as they do vary in terms.
