Rolex Day-Date turns 70: How will the Crown celebrate?

Few timepieces carry the same level of sophistication as the Rolex Day-Date.

Instantly recognisable thanks to its signature day window at 12 o’clock and date at 3, it has long been the preferred watch of world leaders and businessmen.

And now ‘The President’ dress watch is approaching a whopper of a birthday – its 70th.

How the Day-Date became an icon

Born in 1956, the Day-Date was the first wristwatch to display both the full day of the week and the date spelled out in full. But it wasn’t just about functionality – it was about presence.

Exclusively created in precious metals like white gold and platinum, the Day-Date quickly became the ultimate symbol of success.

Then of course, came the ‘President bracelet’ which only reinforced that image. With its semi-circular links and refined finish, it became one of the most recognisable bracelets in the industry.

What can we expect for the golden anniversary?

Over the decades, Rolex has continued to refine the Day-Date rather than reinvent it. Updates have only pointed to subtle dial variations and upgraded movements, all while keeping the core design intact.

The modern Day-Date, particularly the Day-Date 40, (introduced in 2016 for the 60th anniversary), featured Rolex’s calibre 3255 movement, offering improved accuracy and a 70-hour power reserve. It’s a quiet evolution, but very much in keeping with the brand’s philosophy.

But if the past is anything to go by, we know that any anniversary model released in 2026 won’t be ‘flashy’. Instead, the occasion is likely to be marked by refinement, not reinvention.

By the time the model approached its 40th anniversary in the mid-1990s, Rolex again avoided any overt commemorative edition. There were just improvements in finishing and reliability.

Here’s what we’d like to see…

A special dial variation

Rolex does like experimenting with dial materials. We’ve seen meteorite through to malachite.

A 70th anniversary edition could introduce a unique dial finish or colourway exclusive to the milestone. We would love to see sunburst gold tones or even some kind of vintage-inspired dial configuration.

Subtle case or bracelet updates

With many fans of the brand seeing the design as near-perfect, it’s hard to add more perfection! But Rolex could introduce minor tweaks – perhaps a refined President bracelet or updated clasp mechanism.

A new precious metal or finish

One thing Rolex doesn’t shy away from is trying out different materials such as Everose gold or platinum.

For the platinum anniversary, we’d like to see a new alloy or finishing technique debuted, something to give a touch of luxury.

Time for an upgraded movement?

Although the current calibre 3255 is already highly advanced, Rolex may take the opportunity to further enhance performance.

An extended power reserve could be an option or perhaps an anti-magnetic property. Obviously a technical upgrade would align with how the brand typically marks milestones.

Looking back to look forward

Historically, Rolex anniversaries have focused on evolution rather than limitation.

We’re not expecting a highly restricted run but perhaps an update that becomes part of the permanent collection.

Whether the Crown introduces a commemorative dial or another kind of upgrade, what is certain is that expectations are high.
