Rolex Oyster case: Keeping components safe since 1926

This year marks a very special anniversary for Rolex – the Oyster case turns 100!

The Oyster was the world’s first truly waterproof watch case, featuring a screw-down crown and sealed back.

For enthusiasts, the case isn’t just a technical achievement – it’s a symbol of reliability and craftsmanship.

Over the past century, it’s at the heart of almost every Rolex watch, from the legendary Submariner and Explorer to the Datejust and Day-Date.

What is so special about the Rolex Oyster case?

First introduced in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, the key to the success of the design is the tightly sealed middle case, which protects from water, dust and shocks.

Back then, timepieces were far less robust than they are today and were easily damaged by these things.

Usually made from high-quality stainless steel, gold, or platinum, the case is both durable and refined.

Its robust engineering laid the foundation for Rolex’s reputation for precision, reliability, and toughness – the ‘Oyster’ is literally the watch that keeps everything inside safe, just like its namesake shell.

How could the Oyster celebrate its big birthday?

As Rolex celebrates this centenary, speculation is already buzzing online.

While the brand rarely reveals plans in advance, past milestones suggest that any celebration will be thoughtful rather than flashy.

Experts suggest Rolex may treat this milestone through subtle refinements across the entire catalogue rather than a single, branded commemorative watch.

Some are hoping for special-edition Oyster models, perhaps with small details that acknowledge the 1926 creation.

Others imagine anniversary releases across Rolex’s key collections – from professional watches to dressier models – that showcase the Oyster case’s enduring versatility.

There’s also excitement around potential technical updates. It would be a great opportunity to introduce new materials, enhanced waterproofing or updated movements in certain Oyster models.

But we would absolutely love to see a Rolex perpetual in platinum. It’s in the current collection and is wildly popular and fun has been had in the range previously. An ice blue dial and an exhibition case back would be amazing, we know. But the price tag would be huge.

 A century of excellence

Looking back over 100 years, the Oyster case has proven itself time and again. It’s a design that has evolved without ever losing its identity, and it has helped Rolex become one of the most respected names in luxury watches.

With the centenary approaching, it’s a big moment for the brand and for collectors. Whatever Rolex unveils, the Oyster case will remain front and centre of it.
