Shanghai showstopper for Watches and Wonders 2021

Watches and Wonders Shanghai has been hailed a huge success with over 12,000 guests enjoying the socially distanced event.

New releases, major announcements, exceptional creations and a hugely popular Morning Show made for an impressive event, following on from the online Geneva event last week.

Shanghai’s West Bund Art Centre hosted the physical show from April 14 – 18 with 19 brands including Cartier, IWC, Rolex and Chophard there to show off their latest offerings. The entire event amassed millions of views, reaching record audiences across news, blogs and online platforms.

“After more than ten days devoted to innovation and creativity, Watches and Wonders 2021 has come to a most encouraging conclusion. In an ultra-connected world, digital proved it is a powerful and effective tool for taking watchmaking excellence to enthusiasts all around the world. It creates new opportunities for the industry as a complement to an in-person fair,” organisers said.

Here we take a look at some of our favourite new releases from Shanghai:

Reverso Tribute Nonantième from Jaeger-LeCoultre

What a stunning watch for the first day of Shanghai. The beautiful limited edition model marks the 90th year of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s most iconic watch design. The watch’s rose gold case comes in at 49.4mm and is elegantly adorned with everything Art Deco including angled curves and gadroons.

We love the silver brushed front dial and the rectangular minutes track, with gold Dauphine hands for an extra glamorous look.

On the reverse of the watch you can discover a figure of eight-shaped aperture composed of two different-sized circles at the centre.Within the small aperture is a digital hour numeral which coordinates with the minutes disk in the bigger circle. A gold sun and moon surround the blue disk which is covered in tiny stars, to indicate the daytime or nighttime hours.

An in-house movement has been developed for this one – the manual-winding calibre  826 with no fewer than 230 components. It also boasts a power reserve of 42 hours and has a black alligator strap to complete the look. But be quick! There are only 190 pieces available.

Little Lange 1 Moon phase from A. Lange & Söhne

Yet more twinky stars can be found on this beautiful dark-blue dial complemented by a white gold dial from A. Lange & Söhne. A white-gold moon accurately orbits along its course, beneath the iconic Lange outsize date. In a second version, a bezel set with 56 brilliant-cut diamonds creates a radiant frame for the stunning dial.

The eye-catching detail is the silver dial coated with shimmering copper particles to create a starry sky. Roman numerals are applied at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock. Hour markers are crafted from rhodiumed gold, just like the hands. Finish it off with a shiny leather strap for the perfect out of this world gift!

Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K from Tudor

The first diver’s watch to be made in yellow gold and with an open case back was one of the new models to be unveiled.

Tudor’s new model – the Black Bay Fifty-Eight 18K – is based on the popular old model, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight. The new reference points to the precious metal of its case but also to 1958, when the first Tudor diving watch that was water resistant to 200m, the ‘Big Crown’ was introduced.

With a 39mm case and an olive green dial, it’s perfect for a slender wrist or people who like compact watches. Two straps are included with the model – a green Jacquard fabric with gold band and dark brown alligator.
