Top tips for choosing the perfect luxury watch

Owning a luxury watch is a timeless pleasure. Timepieces make bold style statements. The craftsmanship and engineering behind each one is extraordinary.

However, with so many factors to consider when buying one – dial sizes and watch straps – and then white gold, titanium, steel or two tone, not to mention overall style and brands, where do you start?

Whether you’re buying your first luxury watch or adding to your collection, check out our guide to avoid common mistakes and make a wise investment.

CONSIDER your budget

Don’t be discouraged by long waiting lists for new watches; if you can afford your dream watch, keep pursuing it. While some waiting lists can be as long as a decade, the pre-owned market offers a better chance of finding what you love.

If the price is a concern, save up for the watch you truly want instead of settling for a less preferred model. Think of it like a honeymoon—don’t settle for less when you can aim for the best. Here at Luxe Watches we have some stunning pre-loved watches on offer which you will love.

DEFINE your watch purpose

Determine whether the watch is for everyday wear, special occasions, or a specific activity like diving or sports. Consider features such as water resistance, chronographs, GMT functions, or moon phase indicators based on your needs. Where will you wear it?

If you’re a builder but a fan of vintage watches, you’ll need to be careful where you’re wearing them. One knock against a wall and you might smash the dial completely.

SIZE is everything

Ensure the watch case diameter fits well on your wrist. While we get the oversized thing, common sizes range from 38mm to 44mm and personal preference should rule your head if you’re going to spend a lot of hard-earned cash.

You should also consider the thickness of the case, especially if you plan to wear the watch under a shirt cuff.

DON’T rely on your watch as an investment

Once you buy a watch, chances are, their price will dip immediately. There are simply no guarantees when it comes to which watches will make money or drop value but high-quality timepieces are built to last and can be passed down through generations, making them a timeless heirloom.

However it’s fair to say that watches from reputable brands that are limited in production or rare do tend to retain or even increase in value over time. Big names like Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet have a strong history of producing high-quality timepieces that often appreciate.

AVOID buying too many watches

Cash burning a hole in your pocket? Buying too many watches is an easy mistake to make. But don’t invest in a watch that will end up gathering dust at the bottom of a wardrobe.

Use past watches to make informed decisions, learning what you like about them. And don’t buy a watch because you’ve spied someone else wearing it on Insta. That  Rolex Datejust II (116334) with lilac numerals looks quite cool… but some of the numerals are upside down and it’s incredibly unusual If you like something original, then great find. But are those numbers going to bug you in the end?
