Which is the best Rolex to take on holiday?
If you were loving the heat in the UK last week and you’re heading on a jet plane to seek the sun again, you might be wondering which watch to pack.
If you’re lucky enough to have a number of Rolex watches or you’re wondering which to buy, then we can help you answer questions like ‘Are Rolex watches waterproof?’ and which Rolex can withstand heat?’
So before you reach for your suncream and passport, check out our answers to some of your most popular questions.
Can a Rolex withstand heat?
In short, the answer is yes. A Rolex can take extreme temperatures including cold ones. Each Rolex is subject to demanding tests so they can be sold as COSC-certified.
The tests include testing the accuracy in different temperatures: 23°C for 12+ hours to stabilise the temperature and then for five consecutive days, and the same testing at 8°C and 38°C. Only movements or watches that meet the accuracy requirements of this standard receive an official chronometer certificate.
But just because it can doesn’t mean you should frequently subject the watch to it as this can cause the movement to wear prematurely. The parts most affected – although they can take it – are the gaskets (rubber seals) of the watch as extreme temperatures will cause them to expand and contract thus wearing out quicker, whilst the lubrication inside the movement will also be affected which will mean more frequent watch servicing.
Can a Rolex go in salt water?
Everyone likes a little dip in the sea on holiday, right? If you’re planning to come out of the waves all James Bonds style, then you’re going to need to make sure your Rolex is waterproof.
We know Rolex watches are water-resistant but what about salt water?
Well, in Rolex’ own words, ‘Water is the natural element for a Rolex with a metal bracelet, including the salt-water of the sea and ocean. All Rolex wristwatches are waterproof to depths of at least 100 metres for Oyster Perpetual models, and 50 metres for Cellini models.’
The Swiss brand advises that after diving or a day at the beach, rinse your Rolex in fresh tap water to remove any sand grains. Rolexes are built to last a lifetime and withstand harsh conditions and environments.
Can I set the time for home and abroad with a Rolex?
One of our favourite travel watches is Rolex’ GMT-Master II. Its strong steel case is robust but it also has extremely useful functions for holidaymakers. The black dial features luminous coated dot hour markers and a date indication at three o’clock. Newer GMTs also feature a ceramic 24-hour graduated bezel, which allows wearers to set their home destination time and their current local time, making it the perfect choice for jetsetters.
We also love this 2012 Sky-Dweller, created especially for those travelling a lot. Not only does it have an annual calendar equipped with the date and month, but it also indicates an extra time zone on the 24-hour disc on the dial — perfect for jet setters who frequently find themselves in another city.
Which Rolex is best for snorkelling and diving?
If you’re planning to spend more time in the sea than out, we highly recommend a Rolex Submariner.
We particularly like the 116610LN which has a waterproof steel case and luminous material over a black dial. The luminous element in addition to the ceramic bezel with 60-minute graduations, allows divers to be in control of their dive time and guarantees the dial’s visibility whilst under water.
For avid divers and greater water resistant depth, we like the Sea Dweller ref 126600 and Deep Sea ref 126660, which both have 43-44mm cases.
