Winners and watches of the 2019 Oscars
On Sunday night Hollywood’s stars came out in force to enjoy the 91st Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars. As usual, style was at the forefront of the occasion.
With many a glitzy gown on offer, a fine selection of today’s most adored actors and actresses came together, donning their suave timepieces to see who was to add one of those coveted gold statues to their collection.
Mahershala Ali
Possibly the first actor ever to grace a beanie on the red carpet, Mahershala Ali won the Best Supporting Actor gong for his role in the outstanding Best Picture winner Green Book.
While we weren’t convinced by his choice of headgear, the Santos de Cartier Skeleton watch on his wrist made up for it.
Available at a mere £23,000, the steel-cased timepiece with manual winding features two bracelets with equipped with the “QuickSwitch” interchangeability system. With more than 138 parts and 20 jewels, it was certainly a showstopper where watches are concerned.
Rami Malek
The Bohemian Rhapsody star, best known for his lead role in hit TV series Mr Robot, chose the perfect accompaniment for his swish tuxedo. His chosen timepiece, the Cartier Tank Américaine featured a unique octagonal crown and a navy blue alligator strap.
Let’s hope the watch – priced around £5,000, survived Malek’s tumble from the stage after collecting his award, which saw paramedics tending to him!
Bradley Cooper
Joined on stage by Lady Gaga to sing their Oscar-nominated song Shallow from the movie A Star is Born, Bradley donned a very trendy blue dial Big Pilot from IWC – International Watch Company.
The prestigious watch from Schaffhausen, is a one-off piece which has been specially engraved and is set to be auctioned by Sotheby’s, with all proceeds going to the Antoine de Saint-Pilot Exupéry Youth Foundation, an initiative to help children in disadvantaged circumstances.
The watch, which resembles those from the new Spitfire line, features only IWD-manufactured calibres and celebrates the unique engineering of the British fighter aircraft. The Top Gun and Le Petit Prince are special editions as part of the same series.
Pharrell Williams
A beautiful Richard Mille timepiece also made its appearance on stage as rapper come singer-songwriter Pharrell Williams, dressed in a camouflage jacket and shorts combo, wore a RM 70-01 Tourbillon created in collaboration with avid cyclist Alain Prost.
Mille required a design which would create a balancing act between volume, its physical requirements and its features, as well as the user’s comfort.
Michelle Yeoh, who helped him present the award for the Best Animated Feature Film, wore the RM 037 in red gold on a new red gold bracelet.
