Wrist of a God: The two faces of Maradona watches

A controversial, flawed, genius… the legend of Diego Maradona has followed him from the streets of Buenos Aires to the heights of the World Cup trophy.

The Argentinean master is still regarded by many a certain generation as the greatest footballer to ever play the beautiful game despite countryman Lionel Messi’s attempts to usurp the squat maestro.

While modern Messi nets with either foot regularly, Diego was unusually, truly a one-footed technician; his left boot as smooth as the sweeping minute hand of a luxury timepiece.

With the release of a new film on June 14, ‘Diego Maradona’ directed by Asif Kapadia of ‘Senna’ and ‘Amy’ fame, the man who broke English hearts with his Hand of God goal in 1986 is back in the spotlight.

But many won’t appreciate that as well as the cracking strikes, cocaine and controversy, Maradona is a lover of a classic piece of wristwear. Here we take a look back at Maradona’s watch collection.

You may have noticed that wherever he goes, Maradona can be spotted wearing a watch on both wrists. Why? He likes to know the local time, as well as the time in his homeland, Argentina, wherever he may be in the world. Kind of sweet, hey?

Maradona, who last played for his home country in 1994, has been wearing two identical watches at the same time, since 2004.

To celebrate the impending start of FIFA World Cup Russia 2018, Swiss watchmaker Hublot asked what makes a champion and picked its 13 ambassadors to answer.

“To become a champion, you must never give up or stop practicing,” Diego Maradona’s portrait reads. “The most important thing: respect your parents, as they are your best advisors.”

The Hublot King Power Maradona Limited Edition is a stunning piece and comes in two versions The case is 48mm wide and the matte black ceramic case looks slick against the skeleton-style dial. But the best feature is Maradona’s signature and number 10 on the dial, while his famous victory pose is on the rear.

Maradona is also a fan of Rolex and has been spotted wearing two stainless steel Daytona‘s on many occasions.

He’s also been spotted wearing a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner watch.

And with such terrific taste, it means that the Italian tax men have enjoyed recouping some of almost $40 million that he owes in taxes from when he played for Napoli. Amongst the haul of goods they seized, including his signature diamond earring, they took two Rolex watches worth around 11,000 Euros.
