Hands on: We get to grips with a ‘Jumbo’ 5168G
We see many watches come and go here at Luxe Watches but we’re very excited to get our hands on this particular Patek Philippe.
First introduced at Baselworld 2019, the 5168G is the very embodiment of modern sporty-chic.
The white gold Aquanaut in a dynamic khaki green maintains the popular octagonal bezel and iconic porthole-inspired case design, but yes, it’s another one where you’re in for a long wait if you fancy owning one.
Size matters
But despite its nickname ‘Jumbo’ it’s not actually that big when you compare it to other Aquanauts but we do love the size and style.
We think it’s super comfortable on the wrist, with the case coming in at 42.2mm and 8.25mm thick, making a distinctive way to differentiate between the white gold and stainless steel versions.
Versatile shade
The khaki green is an unusual colour choice for Patek but it is noticeable. Not in a ‘Hulk’ kind of way but the tone is matte, rather than bold. It’s really quite a versatile choice as it complements a range of outfits.
The tropical green rubber strap is slightly deeper than the dial but has a similar tone. Its compact buckle boasts a main plate that touches the wrist and also acts as a release button, allowing for a comfortable wear.
Fancy features
For low light conditions, fans of the brand will love the Superluminova coating applied to the applied white gold Arabic numerals. Luminous five-minute markers in 18K white gold complete the time indications, with the date appearing in an aperture at 3 o’clock.
The rounded octagonal case and bezel combines polished and satin finishes, along with a screw-down crown. The finish is nice but not over-the-top. Bridges are decorated, edges are round-chamfered and polished.
The 5168G is water resistant to 120 metres.
Movement
A sapphire caseback gives a great view of the self-winding calibre 324 SC movement. Despite the very simple functions, it does boast some fantastic developments from Patek including the Gyromax – a type of balance wheel that can be finely adjusted for accuracy simply by rotating weights mounted along the inside of the periphery of the rotor, as well as the Spiromax balance spring.
The 21k white gold rotor generates the energy, with the timepiece offering an amazing power reserve of 45 hours.
