The bold and the beautiful: Rainbow creations for all
During lockdown, drawn, painted and lego rainbows have adorned many windows up and down the country as people look to the symbol of hope as a sign of unity.
At a time when we’ve been unable to hug our loved ones, they’ve given us a little reminder just lately, that sunshine always follows rain.
But many a jeweller has experimented with dazzling hues and colourful gems over the years, offering a spectrum of beautiful timepieces.
But now demand for rainbow-coloured creations has soared, we check out what’s on offer for the bold among us.
Jacob & Co. Astronomia Fleurs De Jardin Rainbow
The Astronomia Fleurs de Jardin Rainbow, which launched 101 pieces this year, takes the elements of a summer garden and stores them all paperweight-style.
Designed to “recreate a garden on your wrist,” the striking offering features multi-colored sapphire flowers at the Tourbillon, time display, and upper level, all of which go clockwise around the dial. The base is also set with rainbow sapphire flowers but moves in the opposite direction.
The rose gold case features more rainbow gems and the whole thing is topped off with a 288-facet Jacob-cut bright green tsavorite in the middle.
Victoire de Castellane’s Gem Dior Secret Watch
An explosion of colour, this watch – which was created on a post-it note – features a movable jewelled facade on a yellow gold bracelet.
De Castellane has made the stones the unavoidable focus for the watch and for the series of jewellery in this range, grouping them together in crystal-like formations that show off the colour gradation of natural stones including sapphires, emeralds, diamonds and more.
Chopard Imperiale Joaillerie Rainbow
Boasting 581 sapphires, this timepiece is a true work of art with its kaleidoscope of sapphires.
But it’s not just the 40mm case, bezel and dial that are impressive as the bracelet is just as flashy.
Powered by Chopard’s 01.03-C calibre mechanical self-winding movement, this bold watch features an impressive 60-hour power reserve.
Chopard claims 1,012 hours were taken in cutting, and setting the stones alone but this is often the case with such intricate designs as much time and resources are needed to produce these colour-intense styles.
Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 II
Our favourite pick of the bunch is this rainbow-dial which was hugely popular at its launch earlier this year, with its original black dial model selling out in hours.
This 42mm stainless steel version, with just 1000 pieces available, has a dark blue dial and ceramic bezel.
And perhaps the best thing about this offering is that in recognition of the worldwide solidarity to defeat Coronavirus, Breitling says it will gift an amount of the profit from each watch sold to help global healthcare charities, including the UK’s ‘NHS Charities Together’.
